Highly interdisciplinary consortium

Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas

The Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas is the largest research center in Greece with well-organized facilities and highly qualified personnel. The Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology  is one of the seven Institutes of FORTH. IMBB’s aim is to promote scientific excellence in biological sciences. The Biosensors Lab focuses on acoustic wave biosensors, covering the whole range of device fabrication to bioanalytical and biological applications. Current research includes: (i) design of novel clinical assays based on acoustic wave devices for the detection of proteins in patients’ samples (e.g., for cardiovascular risk assessment), or genetic markers during hybridization assays (single nucleotide polymorphism detection in genetic diseases); (ii) the development of biophysical approaches for the structural and mechanical analysis of biomolecules and biomolecular interactions; (iii) the design of acoustic biosensors and integrated micro-systems for Lab-on-Chip (LOC) applications for the development of simple, versatile and sensitive diagnostic tools.

AWSensors

AWSensors is a Spanish company founded by a group of researchers at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), where research on instrumentation for acoustic wave micro-sensors characterization under liquid loading has been carried out for more than 20 years. AWSensors designs, develops and commercializes instrumentation for characterization of acoustic resonators used as sensors in bio-technological and electrochemical applications monitoring. These designs are based on their different patented systems. AWSensors markets QCM, HFF-QCM and SAW-LOVE sensors in specially designed supports and adapted to special flow cells for different applications both in liquid and gas.

Curie Institute

Curie Institute is an interdisciplinary, non-profit foundation dedicated to cancer research and treatment. It was founded by Marie Curie and her family, with the aim of applying the progress of science to human health. It is recognized as one of Europe’s best places for interdisciplinary research and translational medicine. It is at the heart of the Montagne Ste Genevieve Campus, comprising the highest density of high excellence interdisciplinary research and education in France. It strongly promotes interactions between fundamental research and medicine, and is a European leaser in this field. It is strongly involved in the development of innovative technologies for medicine, and has an active IP protection and exploitation policy. Importantly, Curie Institute involves an hospital dedicated to cancer treatment, with 350 beds, around 10000 patients treated per year.

Jobst Technologies

Jobst Technologies company was originally founded in 2002 at the Institute of Microsystems Technology IMTEK (University Freiburg), Germany. It has set up numerous R&D and production processes clustering around polymer layer technologies and polymer synthesis and processing. Amongst them are also processes for polymers used in biosensing and other functional membranes like filters. Strategic company development is inspired by the slogan: “Rational technology integration aiming at bio- micro convergence”.

Ben Gurion University

Ben Gurion University is an academic public University, a leading research-and-teaching Institute in Israel. The University has close to 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students in various schools and programs, including a prominent medical school. While BGU is known for several years now as the most sought-after school for undergraduate education in Israel (primarily in science and engineering), the university places a strong emphasis on scientific research and has invested over $100M within the past 10 years on construction and research infrastructure and facilities, particularly in the biotechnology and nanotechnology areas.

University of Crete

The University of Crete is a multi-disciplinary, research-oriented Institution, situated in the cities of Rethymnon and Heraklion. The Faculty of Medicine and Departments of Physics and Biology are located in the recently constructed facilities in Voutes, Heraklion. The laboratory of Tumor Biology is staffed by 4 medical oncologists holding academic appointments, 5 post-doc scientists, 5 biologists, 5 technicians and 3 students. The laboratory has the entire infrastructure needed for executing experiments that make use of massively parallel sequencing and genomic data processing and analysis. There is a closed collaboration between the Laboratory of Tumor Cell Biology located at the School of Medicine of University of Crete and the Department of Medical Oncology of University General Hospital in order to develop and validate the most promising discoveries into improved diagnostics and treatments

Autonomous University of Madrid

The group from Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain, belongs to the IFIMAC research Institute. It is a new center pursuing cutting-edge research and scientific excellence. It comprises researchers from several University departments aiming to advance the limits of knowledge in both theoretical and experimental Condensed Matter Physics. Fifty researchers constitute its permanent staff with up to seventy postdocs/PhD students. The soft-matter area of the IFIMAC covers subjects as interfaces and phase transitions in complex liquids, glasses, colloids, polymers and membranes, molecular biophysics and systems biology. It has a solid experience in hydrodynamic modelling of complex fluids and multiscale simulations, targeting systems ruled by disparate time or lenght scales
